Jeanette Walls, author of The Glass Castle It's impossible to read A Place Called Home and not want to redouble your efforts to fight the systems of poverty that have plagued America for far too long. In this book, David shares his deeply personal story and issues a rousing call to make this a more humane and compassionate nation. HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON There are millions of homeless children in America today and in A Place Called Home, award-winning child welfare advocate David Ambroz writes about growing up homeless in New York for eleven years and his subsequent years in foster care, offering a window into what so many kids living in poverty experience every day. When David and his siblings should be in elementary school, they are instead walking the streets seeking shelter while their mother is battling mental illness. They rest in train stations, 24-hour diners, anywhere that's warm and dry; they bathe in public restrooms and steal food to quell their hunger.

Raw, Honest Memoir - Highly Recommend!

David reflects on a childhood of hardship with blunt authenticity. This is a compelling read and an important window into the realities of foster care in the U.S. There are moments in the book that are shocking, heart-wrenching, heartwarming... It is a quick read but one that will stick with the reader for months (if not years) to come!

Inspirational

In this memoir, which touches your heart over and over again, Mr. Ambroz presents his difficult childhood with frankness and honesty. He is open and courageous throughout his story. His childhood was horrendous, to say the least. He encountered abuse (physical and mental), neglect, hunger, homelessness, anguish, prejudices and fear throughout his childhood. He provides insight into the challenges of a LGBTQ child who is homeless and in the foster system. Yet, he’s now a loving adult. In transparency, Mr. Ambroz joined our CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Book Club discussion. We were privileged to gain additional insight into the “rest of his story” and his ongoing efforts to change America’s foster system. He is an amazing person! As an adult, his “can do” and loving approach to life is motivating, especially considering his upbringing. If you enjoy memoirs and care about children in society, don’t miss this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the injustices in the United States for many children. After a homeless and foster childhood, Mr. Ambroz’s book also shares his visions for how each of us can help thousands of children living a similar life. I wish everyone would read his book so we, as a society, can stop homelessness and help children live a successful life in adulthood. Read it, you won’t regret it.
