Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band-if he can just persuade his dad to let him quit his job at their struggling family bakery. Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away over rising dough and hot ovens. But while interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easygoing guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of bread, love is ready to bloom, that is, if Ari doesn't ruin everything. Writer Kevin Panetta and artist Savanna Ganucheau concoct a delicious recipe of intricately illustrated baking scenes and blushing young love, in which the choices we make can have terrible consequences, but the people who love us can help us grow.

Heartstopper at a bakery!

Bloom by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganucheau was such a pleasant surprise. I picked it up off the bargain table at my local bookstore just because the art caught my eye—flipped through a few pages, and before I knew it, I was 50 pages deep, sitting in a chair, fully hooked. I’ve recently dived headfirst into graphic novels, especially those in the same emotional lane as Heartstopper, and this totally fits that vibe. If Heartstopper took place in a cozy, flour-dusted bakery? Yeah, that’s Bloom. The illustrations are gorgeous, the baking scenes are beautifully drawn, and the quiet, slow-burn love story at the center is soft and sweet in the best way. That said, Ari—our main character—definitely came off as a bit bratty at times. I get it, he’s in that messy post-high school, I-want-out-of-my-small-town phase, but whew. I wanted to shake him more than once. However, his growth over the course of the book really pays off, and by the end, I found myself rooting for him. The real gem here, though, is Hector. Kind, grounded, and genuinely passionate about baking—he brings the heart to this book and completely makes it worth the read. All in all, this was a warm, comforting graphic novel with a side of teen angst and a whole lot of charm. A strong 4.25 stars from me. Would recommend to anyone who loves soft queer romance, beautiful artwork, and the healing power of carbs.

AMAZING!!

This is one of my favorite graphic novels! It’s not too fast paced but is packed with emotion and LGBT themes. The ending almost made me cry🥹. I pulled an all nighter reading this book and I haven’t regretted it once!😁

Soft Baking Boyfriends

This is the baking boyfriends soft graphic novel I didn’t know I needed until I started and couldn’t put it down! The art and shading are gorgeous. The story is so heartwarming and relatable. Ari wants to move to the city with his friends/bandmates so their band can make it big – but his parents really need his help at their bakery that is failing to stay afloat. Ari persuades them to hire someone new so this new person can take his place when he leaves. And in comes Hector, who loves to bake and is taking a break from baking school. What takes place is so endearing. It all feels very realistic and Ari acts like a (sometimes irrational) teenager who is technically an adult, but technically also still part of the family business his parents run. I loved how much this focused on baking! I didn’t realize that when picking it up. So much baking, it makes me hungry just thinking about all these yummy baked goods. There’s also a little bit to do with music and Ari’s band (I enjoyed seeing a venue I recognized from Baltimore!) but that isn’t the main focus. The characters really drive this story home and I really enjoyed that. I was sad when I reached the end – I want more of Ari and Hector’s story!
