Important Book
Robin Wall Kimmerer is an acclaimed botanist, bestselling author, and a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Her book, Braiding Sweetgrass (Milkweed Editions), is rich in metaphor, detail, and meaning. My takeaway after reading her book can be summed up in five simple words: We all need each other. Reciprocity is a word the author uses repetitively throughout the narrative. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines RECIPROCITY as "the quality or state of being reciprocal: mutual dependence, action, or influence." In other words, all living things depend on each other for survival. It's a system that requires a constant balance of give and take. Bottomline: If we humans don't have a mutual respect for each other and the natural world, we are doomed. At times, reading Braiding Sweetgrass instead of doomscrolling felt like I'd stumbled upon a cautionary tale a little too late in a world that's already eaten up by cruelty and greed. But I am a person of HOPE, and I will move forward with the knowledge that every blade of grass, every tiny insect, every spec of dust, has a purpose in the circle of life. Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love, said it best when describing Robin Wall Kimmerer's book: "In Braiding Sweetgrass, she takes us on a journey that is every bit as mystical as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise."

This book changed my life
I picked this up randomly at a book shop that was so unorganized I was thrown into orbit, but this book was perfectly centered on a table and I grabbed and it and left. I have never read anything more beautifully written. Robin Wall Kimmerer eloquently delivers information and personal anecdotes about the natural beauty and magic of the earth. She connects her scientific knowledge to her cultural roots and relationship with the land. This is literally my bible and my Roman Empire, there is not a day that goes by that I do not think about this book.

Fascinating and beautifully written
Fascinating and beautifully written. I l found this audiobook after searching for a book that would meet the "nature" square for library bingo. I'm not sure I would have found it otherwise, and I'm so glad I did! It's really fascinating information and provided in accessible language (it doesn't feel like you're reading a textbook). The audiobook is read by the author.

Helps You Respect The World Around You
Not only is the physical copy a perfect echo of its beliefs, through MilkWeed publishing, but it's collection of stories leave you with a genuine feeling of gratitude and newfound do-good attitude. Teachings of reciprocity with nature, and the indigenous lessons of Earth's respect for us, leaves the reader with an outlook on life that they may have lost before. Understanding the unspoken rules of taking only what we are given, and how this applies to our daily consumption of all things is a fantastic wake up call to our especial Western society. We are taught here that tending to others is tending to ourselves. Truly a Need To Read for all people from an author with a seeming heart of gold.
