High Energy and Pure Fantasy
Spoiler Warning TLDR; Although there was a lot of information, what I was able to retain was rich in lore and I could dive into this world for days and still have more questions. I’m extremely excited to read the rest of the series! I enjoy the rhythm of the story, and the uneven pacing of the chapters, it sets special plot information apart showing just how special the information is, with the perfect amount of dramatic flair. I love the world building, with the amount of location jumping the characters do, you still are able to have a full picture of where the story has taken you and even who’s around you. The quick but effective observations of the environment that our main characters are capable of gives a sense of just how skilled they are, and how each character perceives their environments in unique ways allows us insight further into their minds even though it’s a 3rd Person Narrative. At first sight, sixty chapters intimidated me, but some of the chapters serve more as a signifier that the narration is shifting subjects, and are not at all “chapter length. And the amount of characters became a bit overwhelming for me because we are given most everyone’s name and with this sense of a plot some names became lost from that list as I neared the end of the book having to flip back and remember who someone was. The magic system eludes my full understanding but I think I enjoy that! Leaving a bit of mystery around it makes it feel that much more intricate. Although I think it may have just gone over my head in reality. However, I find how our main characters avoids the magic and non magical world collision by just telling everyone the truth is so clever, it’s one of my favorite events in the book.

Couldn't put it down
I didn't know anything about this series when I started reading and I quickly fell in love with the characters. The plot is phenomenal and keeps you guessing at what twists and turns are ahead. I loved the gradual introduction to the world of seraphim and chimera, it didn't feel rushed and the writing is just lovely. It took me maybe a week or two to finish the whole series and it's one of my favorites now. Do yourself a favor and read these books!

Gotcha!
I just completed Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. When I started this I was captivated by the main character Karou for about the first 1/3 of the book. The second third I was not sure if I would finish the book. The last 50 pages were like OMG - Gotcha - I am so hooked. I cried - no sobbing, but tears nonetheless. There is a romance that is of course a huge part of the story, but I was more invested in Karou’s family of Chimerons and her interactions with them. This was really great story and I highly recommend it. I will be obtaining the second and third parts of this trilogy! I gave this 4 stars.

An amazing start to a series
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a bit hard to explain because the mystery of the world and what is going on is slowly revealed and explained to the reader throughout the book. Our heroine is Karou, she doesn’t really know where she came from; she goes on mysterious errands, deals in actual wishes, and interacts with “monsters” daily. Her life is turned upside down when she meets Akiva. Drawn to each other almost immediately, secrets are revealed that change everything about the world that Karou thought she knew. I don’t want to reveal too much because one of the things I loved about this book was letting all the mysteries play out. I loved that as a reader you are just as much in the dark as Karou, you discover everything as she does. I loved the whole world that was built in this book, and the magic involved. You have our recognizable world, and then the incredible second world of the Seraphim and the Chimera. Taylor does an excellent job showing and building both of these worlds. They feel wholly original, and like nothing I’ve read in a while. This book was also surprisingly romantic which I wasn’t expecting, but enjoyed that added layer to the story and relationships. I honestly cannot recommend Daughter of Smoke and Bone enough. I loved every minute of reading it and was completely sucked in. If you are looking for a new fantasy series definitely check this one out. I can’t wait to see where this series goes.
