Nice crochet but elastic too tight for comfort

I love lace / crochet top socks... these stretch surprisingly well but the elastic at the crochet connection is just too tight for comfort. If you pull them over your knee - good luck being able to wear them all day. In addition, they create a bit of 'muffin top'. I'm not particularly heavy but the tightness of the elastic is too much. The socks are attached to a cardboard insert in multiple places which means there is absolutely no way to even try them on without detaching them, including the price tag. Here's hoping I can still return them. Really wish they had worked but these are going back.
