#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER, NAACP IMAGE AWARD WINNER, A dramatic expansion of a groundbreaking work of journalism, The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story offers a profoundly revealing vision of the American past and present.ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, NPR, Esquire, Marie Claire, Electric Lit, Ms. magazine, Kirkus Reviews, Booklist In late August 1619, a ship arrived in the British colony of Virginia bearing a cargo of twenty to thirty enslaved people from Africa. Their arrival led to the barbaric and unprecedented system of American chattel slavery that would last for the next 250 years. This is sometimes referred to as the country's original sin, but it is more than that: It is the source of so much that still defines the United States. The New York Times Magazine's award-winning, 1619 Project; issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together eighteen essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with thirty-six poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle and resistance.

Real American History, Finally!

I would go as far as to recommend this book be added to national school curriculum at the middle school level. The great thing that we're realizing finally, is that there are different sides to every story and there's also undeniable truths.

File in historical fiction category

Not historically accurate. Shameful that this is being pushed as history and not fictitious.

Opinion piece not true history

I appreciate the stories and perspective. Yet, many of the poems and essays are fiction based upon actual stories. This is not a history book as so many have claimed. This is revisionist history.

Not historically accurate

Slavery did not start in 1619. The first African slaves were bought in 1526 to be a part of the Spanish expedition. I’m not understanding why people want to start slavery in 1619 when 100 years prior there were Africans both free and enslaved, here in the Americas. Even more so this piece of literature only aims to keep descendants of these people in the slave mindset. No other marganlized group is forced every other month to learn about the same historical point as much as black Americans are. Even worse is that part of history isn’t expanded to include black slave owners and how they treated their slaves worse than white slave owners, it doesn’t include slaves arguing over masters (Frederick Douglass bibliography) it doesn’t include why fellow African tribes sold others into slavery and why those African tribes have never had to face the crimes of their own actions towards their own people 500+ years ago. Next time there’s going to be a book on slavery, talk about the truth of what slavery was and not an emotional tidbit trying to keep black Americans angry and bitter for no reason.

The 1619 Project

A poorly written work about the past designed to divide Americans today and instill racial strife throughout the US.

Division based on a narrative

I was curious about all this discussion surrounding this book, but I wish I would not have wasted my money. This author based this book on her hatred for country and with the intent to create further divide. It is not a factual account and historians have certified that the information detailed is not factual. This is a fictional perspective that is not supported by actual events. Authors would have benefited from doing more research before putting out this book.

A Good Read

Real history is a refreshing change from the glossy “ain’t America great” version I was taught so many decades ago. Challenge yourself to know the truth, and this book is an excellent place to begin. Thanks to the author, editors, and publisher!
