A landmark of science fiction's "Golden Age," Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy which comprises the novels Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation has long been regarded a visionary masterpiece whose astonishing historical scope perfectly conveys science fiction's sense of wonder. First published as a cycle of stories in the 1940s and '50s, Asimov's iconic trilogy has endured to become, like the author himself, a legend of science fiction. Set in the far future, Foundation envisions a Galactic Empire that has thrived for 12,000 years, but whose decline into an age of barbarism lasting some 30 millennia is imminent if the predictions of renegade psycho-historian Hari Seldon are accurate. Hoping to shorten the interval of this impending new Dark Age, Seldon convinces the Empire's Commission of Public Safety to allow him to enact a diversionary plan one full of surprising subterfuges and intrigues intended to create and protect a Foundation on which the future Empire will be erected. Foundation and Empire advances the story farther into the future, in which a technologically advanced Foundation triumphs over attacking forces of the collapsing Empire.

Missing text, indeed

As a number of other reviewers have noted, there is indeed text missing from this edition. The reviewer who compared it to a standalone edition of _Second Foundation_ and found no differences simply didn't realise that many of the standalone versions have text missing too -- even the old Del Rey paperbacks, to my surprise. Take a look at the passage just before "Fourth Interlude" in _Second Foundation_. If it ends "You have eaten?" then you have a missing-text version. If instead it ends with "... he knew that the farce was about over" (a couple of pages after "You have eaten?") then it looks like you have a good version.

Nice book, but missing pages for sure.

I really wanted to keep this book, but disappointed that I can confirm it is missing a couple of pages compared to the standalone edition of Second Foundation. I've included photos for comparison. Great in every other respect, but I will return it nonetheless.

Beautiful edition

Beautiful edition and a joy to read, despite the missing text on page 558. I checked a Del Rey pocket edition 2017 and there are some 2 pages missing for sure!

Nice copy but indeed missing content

I examined in this store in July 2020, (leatherbound, seems to have been re-stocked) and as indicated by others, it is definitely missing about two pages worth of material prior to the Fourth Interlude on p558. I compared it with another copy, and one would not notice the discrepancy if they hadn't been aware of the missing conversation between characters. As to the physical quality of the book, it's decently made for the price and a worthwhile edition whereas the steps up from this one come at a significant cost. The missing text however, renders this item an almost complete book.
