I read this book over the holiday and was blown away. Many of Ms. LeGuin's books are too fantasy oriented to me, but this one is solid science fiction. Who wouldn't want to change the world in your dreams? The protagonist certainly doesn't, but he's being manipulted into it. Powerful and metaphorical.

Classic sci-fi
"He felt the heaviness upon him, the weight bearing down endlessly. He thought, I am living in a nightmare, from which from time to time I wake in sleep." (p.38) In this classic scifi by Le Guin the main character, George Orr, is caught taking illegal drugs to try to stop himself from dreaming and is sentenced to see a therapist. The therapist, Dr. William Haber, discovers the reason Orr wants to stop his dreams is because sometimes his dreams change the real world. Instead of helping Orr the ambitious Haber begins to manipulate his patient's dreams to try and create a world in his desired image. Things get...weird. This book is certainly creative. But also bizarre. I often wasn't sure what was going on, but I realize that may have been intentional on Le Guin's part to give the reader the same sense of confusion Orr was experiencing as his reality constantly shifted. If you are a fan of classic scifi this one is part of the cannon and definitely a must read. Scribner just released a nice new edition I would recommend. However, if you're not a fan of the odd and unconventional this is not going to be for you.
