The Picture of Dorian Gray (Collectible Editions) by Oscar Wilde
Product Details
Web ID: 14421844Does not live up to expectations
I bought this book because everyone was saying how good it is and how they fell in love with the character blah blah blah BUT it does not meet those expectations. The book is slow moving, and doesn’t really have much of a plots, its mainly talks about the same scenarios only taking place throughout different days and also the best thing that happened was towards the end of the book the rest was just a long stretch on how miserable he was. The book cover is adorable and very soft, it comes with a attached string to keep track of the pages you read etc other than that i don’t really recommend this book if your looking for something with a hook

Please come out with hardcover format
I so badly want to by this for my sister for Christmas to go along with her B&N collection and this is one of her absolute favorites. But as I’m getting it as a gift that she’ll display with her other collectible editions, there’s no way I’m just buying a paper back :-( Please, please come out with or restock online a hardcover edition!

Amazing novel
The Picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical fiction novel by Oscar Wilde. It was first published in July of 1890. Upon being published the magazine editor removed 500 words of the novel without Wilde’s knowledge out of fear that the story was indecent. Despite this, it was still extremely controversial for its time. The novel follows Dorian’s struggles with beauty, hedonism, and art throughout his life. Basil Hallward is obsessed with Dorian’s beauty and his painting of Dorian ultimately becomes his masterpiece. When Dorian sees the painting he wishes he could look like the painting forever. His wish comes true, and he slowly loses all sense of virtue through the influence of Lord Henry Wotton and his philosophy of “new hedonism”. After Dorian abandons a woman he notices a change in the painting. As time goes on the painting becomes more and more grotesque. Leading to the finale of the novel. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a masterclass in symbolism and philosophical fiction. Without an interest in philosophy, you will likely not find much in this novel for you, as many of its conversations revolve around hedonism and it’s doctrines. If that sounds like something you’d enjoy even a little though, this book is a must-read. What makes it so particularly interesting is there is no clear takeaway, serving to prove what Wilde says in the preface of this novel, that art is meaningless and serves no purpose.

Absolutely amazing!
I bought this book with somewhat high expectations since a friend of mine talked highly about it. The story itself was slow moving towards the middle, but the ending absolutely made up for that. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it, but man my jaw it the floor!! Oscar Wilde is incredible. if you’re thinking about buying it, DO IT! you won’t regret it.

Censored version
If you want to read the uncensored version as Oscar Wilde intended, you need to specifically search that in the description or title of the book. Would've given this 5 stars if it were the correct version. Awesome book, very rereadable.

My first classic
My first classic literature and surprisingly I was not disappointed. Yes the writing is old style and certain views are outdated, however the story did make me think. It made me cry, gasp and wonder. I know it is said to not look for a meaning in the story but you simply can't help yourself. This story is fascinating, breathtaking and I loved every minute of it!
