The national bestseller from Jeffrey Eugenides, the Pulitzer Prize - Winning Author of Middlesex and The Marriage Plot With a New Introduction by Emma Cline Adapted into a critically acclaimed film by Sofia Coppola, The Virgin Suicides is a modern classic, a lyrical and timeless tale of sex and suicide that transforms and mythologizes suburban middle-American life. First published in 1993, The Virgin Suicides announced the arrival of a major new American novelist. In a quiet suburb of Detroit, the five Lisbon sisters - beautiful, eccentric, and obsessively watched by the neighborhood boys commit suicide one by one over the course of a single year. As the boys observe them from afar, transfixed, they piece together the mystery of the family's fatal melancholy, in this hypnotic and unforgettable novel of adolescent love, disquiet, and death. Jeffrey Eugenides evokes the emotions of youth with haunting sensitivity and dark humor and creates a coming-of-age story unlike any of our time.

Best Book I've Read in a Long Time

This book really gave perspective on the Lisbon girls. It showed how much suicide really messes with other people but also shows us how men see women in that age and mentality in their lives as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to find a good mental health book with some entertainment.

More than just an incredible character study!

I know this book is a very polarizing one - either people "love it" or hate it. I fall into the love it category - this is one of my all-time favorites. Once of the complaints I've seen is that other than the suicides, it feels like nothing ever really happens. But to me - that's exactly the point, and why the Lisbon sisters did what they did. The mundanity of their lives and the oppression from their parents was to them, inescapable. What I love most about this book is that Eugenides utilizes a character study of the sisters to illuminate society and humanity at large - the consequences of having to follow societal rules and norms for that sake alone, not being able to express our individuality, and not being able to pursue our passions and desires.

MUST READ

I loved this book! I finished it in four days because I was so invested in it! I loved that it was written from a different perspective! The book only has 5 chapters but the chapters are pretty lengthy! Overall I really enjoyed this book! And I know I’ll end up rereading it again in the future!

Boring

Not a fan of the writing, the point of view, the meaningless details that make the book go on forever even though it’s the shortest book I’ve ever read. Really wanted to DNF this book but somehow pushed through. Will not be recommending to anyone
