Verity by Colleen Hoover

I detected some red flags as soon as I picked up this book—it’s self-published by an author who’s previously published novels with a reputable publisher; the title screams “significant allusion!” (verity means “a fundamentally important principle or belief”), and the Acknowledgments go on for 8 pages (yes, I check the front and back matter before I dive into a book). None of these factors by itself is damning, but taken together…well, it’s a lot to overcome. And then the novel begins with Lowen (low one?) Ashleigh, the narrator, witnessing a random stranger get his skull crushed beneath the wheels of a vehicle on a New York City street. One improbable coincidence after another follows, and the next thing you know, Lowen is hired (by the man who helped her recover from witnessing the novel’s opening tragedy) to finish a series of novels written by his now presumably incapacitated wife after she drove her car into a tree in an apparent suicide attempt. Despite the modern Gothic elements that permeate the ensuing narrative (a remote mansion in the woods, the bedridden wife who might not actually be as sick as she appears, dead children, a paranoid unreliable narrator who also happens to have a history of sleepwalking, and—the pièce de résistance—a found manuscript that seems to incriminate Verity in the death of one of her children), the novel never truly gels. Perhaps it’s all the graphic s*x that Verity describes in her autobiographical manuscript that ruins the Gothic vibe. Or maybe it depends on whether you believe that “antagonistic journaling” is actually a technique that writers use for character development. Whatever the case, Verity has fulfilled my allotment of tawdry domestic thrillers for some time to come.

Excellent mystery thriller
Hoover really brought her A game to this mystery thriller. To get inside the mind of the villain was deeply disturbing. I loved it! I devoured this book because I absolutely HAD to know what was happening. That plot twist was legit crazy. I knew going in that there would be a Jedi mind #?*! but I was NOT expecting that. Highly recommend.

Can’t stop thinking about this book
Let me preface this by saying this book was incredibly disturbing but wow. I cannot stop thinking about this book. I had to read it in one day because I could not put it down and the next day I had to pick it back up to reread certain chapters. This book will haunt you long after you finish it. It’s up to you whether that is a good or bad thing.
